For example, if your main product is running shoes, the obvious keywords or phrases might be "shoes" or "running" or "running shoes".

Your competitor will generally want the same keywords you are looking at purchasing, so if you have the luxury of owning a targeted keyword and it is working for you, try and hold on to it.

Another less expensive but valuable form of web portal advertising is a button or badge. These graphic links are not as targeted as keyword searches, but when placed next to the appropriate content they can be very effective.
