Wave flights on 7 March 2004. Pangborn - WAVE between the airport and Mission Ridge.
This afternoon each glider got in the wave - Dean Johnson in Russia to 11000', Kurt Davis and Dave Goetsch in Lark, Thom Walker and his son in Blanik, Alan Bokma with Mike in Vivat, Laviniu Tirca in Cobra, and Vitek in Russia to 13,600'. The chart below shows Vitek's flight.
Note the table of winds aloft at the time of the flight, in the left upper corner. Vitek towed to 4,500' before releasing... No oxygen was on board so he quit at 13,600', while lift was still strong. Even so he made a 9100' elevation gain, and landed one hour after launching. Vario battery quit during glide south, so he used just the altimeter to determine where lift was. Descent was with spoilers when above Jumpoff, in the lee of the rotor. Below 2000' MSL there was no wind.
A great looking lenticular is sitting over Jumpoff Ridge. Line of rotor clouds extend to the right. Alan is getting the Vivat ready.
Dean came down with a big grin and is now coaching Laviniu who finally put his ship together...

The instrument panel of Russia ...
...shows the high point of this flight. The view is to the north, just as the glider made the last tack in the wave.
